Recabling a Live Grocery Checkout Overnight
At a glance
Client: A local grocery store
Type: Grocery store, checkstand lanes
Services: structured cabling (Cat6), overnight live-store cutover, electrical subcontract coordination, testing and labeling
Scale: 20 Cat6 runs, four overnight shifts, zero registers down during business hours
The constraint
Every register had to work at opening, every morning. The store needed new Cat6 to its checkstand lanes, two drops per station, ahead of a checkout furniture remodel. It stays open late and is staffed overnight, so the work had to fit an overnight window, and any lane we touched had to be pulled, terminated, and tested before the doors opened.
Planning the pulls before the first night
Before we sent an estimate, our lead raised the cutover risk, so we settled the details with the store's IT team in advance. The underfloor duct was reachable through junction boxes in the register furniture, so no floor tiles had to come up. Where an old phone line wasn't needed the next morning, we used it as a pull string and had the new drop live and tested before opening.
The duct got fuller toward one end of the line, so we flipped the order and worked the hardest side first, while we still had nights in reserve.
Overhead backbone, then the floor
A licensed electrician under our subcontract installed the vertical conduit at the center of the checkout line before our crew started. From there we ran the backbone from the equipment rack, along the store's ceiling beam pathway using a scissor lift, and down the conduit. From that drop, runs went north and south through the existing underfloor duct. The work took five visits, four of them overnight.
What's in place now
Twenty new Cat6 runs, terminated at the patch panel, tested, and labeled
Checkout lanes cut over to new cabling, each with a labeled surface mount box
Two new runs at the customer service desk
Two runs staged for a future mobile register
Service loops left long at every location for the new checkstand furniture
The result
No register was down during business hours at any point in the project, and every new run has the slack it needs for the upcoming checkstand remodel.
